All visitors require a visa before travelling to Bhutan (except those from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives, for whom the relevant processes and fees are outlined separately below).

As part of the visa application process, you will be required to pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per day (per adult; concessionary rates apply for children). More information about the SDF can be found here.

A non-refundable, one-off visa application fee of US$40 is also payable.

You can apply online for a visa or permit by completing an application form, or if you’re travelling with a tour operator or staying at a hotel, they can apply on your behalf.

You can apply for yourself and anyone you’re travelling with, provided you have the required information for each person travelling.

To apply for a visa online you will need:

1. A digital copy of a valid passport

2. A recent digital passport photo

3. Arrival and departure dates

4. Valid travel insurance for the duration of your travel

FOUR STEPS to Get Your Bhutan Visa in 2024

1. Plan your Bhutan Trip and Add Tour Data

Design your Bhutan tour, then apply for your Bhutan visa online by completing an application form, or you can choose a tour operator like us to apply for the visa on your behalf. Send us a digital copy of a valid passport, a recent digital passport photo, arrival and departure dates, and valid travel insurance for the duration of your travel, and we will do the rest for you.

2. Do the Payment and Submit Visa Application

After getting the full payment of your Bhutan tour, we will submit a visa application while do the payment of the visa fee (USD 40 per person) and the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US $100 per night on your behalf. When the payment reaches the Tourism Council of Bhutan, an email notification will be offered. Note: The visa application fee of US$40 is non-refundable.

3. Get the Visa Clearance Letter and Print It Out

After the submission of your visa application with the payment of the visa fee and SDF, the Department of Immigration of Bhutan will issue a visa clearance letter (Bhutan E-visa) within 5 working days. Before your departure, we will send the electronic document to your e-mail box. Note: Do print your Bhutan E-visa out, as it is needed to check in at the airport.

4. Get the Visa Stamped on Your Passport upon Arrival

At your point of entry, no matter in the Paro International airport or on the land border with India, the Bhutan visa will be stamped into your passport. Kindly note that the visa clearance letter issued by Department of Immigration of Bhutan is not valid for travel. Note: Any passengers without a valid visa clearance letter (do print it out in advance) will be denied at the check-in counter.
